В Древней Руси летоисчисление начиналось с марта – прихода весны и лишь с ХIV века в России положено считать начало церковного и гражданского летоисчисления с сентября. В старину русские названия Марта были разные: на севере –сухий- из-за весеннего тепла, на юге – березозол – из-за берез, которые под действием солнца наливаются соком и пускают почки. А еще март нередко называли «пролетьем», предвестником лета.
Вот некоторые поверья и поговорки:
Мартовская вода пользительна из снега от веснушек и загара. Мартовская вода целебная (из мартовского снега).
В народе наступление весны праздновалось 14 марта и праздновалось очень весело и получило название Весновки. Про этот день в месяцеслове читаем: « Ныне март начинает, /Весну красну возвещает». Женщины, девицы и дети с пригорков пели : «Весна красна!/ Что ты нам принесла?/Красно летичко».
17 марта в народе называли Герасим Грачевник, Кикиморы. В этот день прилетали грачи. Было замечено, если грачи летят прямо на гнездо, то весна будет дружная. Русский люд с радостью их встречал, т.к. считалось, что грачи могут выжить из дома и со двора нечистую силу. Поэтому в этот день с помощью заговора выживали кикимору.
22 марта в народе считают днем второй встречи весны (первая – на Сретение, третья – на Благовещение). Крестьяне в этот день ходили окликать весну. Предвестниками весны они считали прилет жаворонков.
23 марта в народе этот день называют : Василиса- вешней воды указательница. У Василисы – весенние заботы отвести воду от дома, чтобы подпол не ушла.
24 марта называют: Заря-кукушка. Кукушка начинает кукование и всполашивает зорьку утреннюю. В этот день начинали работы в саду. Были даже особые заповеди садоводства.
